Most clothes that young people buy are from fast fashion retailers like Pacsun, American Eagle, TopShop, and H&M, just to name a few. Fast fashion brands make their clothes unethically and are constantly changing their styles to make you buy the latest thing. This consumer mindset is the basis of fast fashion and is partly what makes this industry so harmful. Fast fashion brands usually produce their clothes overseas in sweatshops where workers are paid next to nothing while laboring in terrible conditions. Not to mention, the production and shipping of these clothes polutes the air and the water. Since these clothes are so inexpensive, consumers are tempted to buy more and more. However, these items are very low quality, so most of them end up in the landfill. Now I'll admit that even I shop at fast fashion stores, but I try my best to be more conscious of what I buy. When you buy from a fast fashion brand, you are supporting what they do, so here are some tips to step away from fast fashion!

1. Shop at a thrift store or any kind of secondhand store!

Thrift stores prevent clothes from being thrown in the landfill and you can find great quality items for a great price. Check out my thrifting tips post if you want!

You can even thrift shop online!- https://www.thredup.com

2. Buy only things that you will wear a lot

Instead of buying something because it is inexpensive, buy things that you will wear more, even if it means investing a little more.

3. In general, buy clothes from stores that have high quality, so that they last longer

I'd suggest nordstrom(although they do carry many fast fashion brands), abercrombie and fitch, or brandy melville

4. Buy from stores that a specifically sustainable

Many of these stores are very expensive, but the high quality is worth it!

Reformation- I LOVE their dresses. Unfortunately, I don't own one but I hope to someday.

Whimsy+ Row
